Movers Ruislip Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety policy explains how Movers Ruislip manages risks and protects employees, customers, visitors and the public during moving and removal activities. Our work involves lifting, carrying, loading, driving and operating equipment in homes, offices and various premises, so effective health and safety management is central to how we operate.
Movers Ruislip is committed to complying with all relevant health and safety legislation, approved codes of practice and recognised industry guidance applying to the removals sector. We aim to prevent injury and ill health, safeguard property and maintain safe standards across all our moving services.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety sits with the company management, who ensure that appropriate resources, planning and supervision are in place. Managers are responsible for implementing this policy, arranging risk assessments, providing suitable training and monitoring performance.
Supervisors and team leaders must ensure that every move is planned and carried out safely, that staff follow safe systems of work and that any concerns are reported promptly. They must lead by example, enforce the use of personal protective equipment and stop work if conditions become unsafe.
All employees, contractors and temporary workers have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must cooperate with the company on safety matters, follow instructions and training, use equipment correctly and report hazards, incidents or near misses without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Movers Ruislip carries out risk assessments for typical moving activities and, where required, for specific jobs or locations. These assessments identify hazards such as manual handling, trips and falls, traffic movement, use of lifting equipment, access issues and environmental conditions.
Based on these assessments we develop and maintain safe working practices for key activities, including packing, dismantling and reassembling furniture, carrying items up and down stairs, moving goods through confined areas, loading and unloading vehicles and working at or near roadways. These procedures are communicated to staff and reviewed regularly.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a significant part of removal work and a major cause of injury if not controlled. All staff involved in lifting and carrying are given manual handling training appropriate to their role. This includes safe lifting techniques, team lifting, use of handling aids, recognising personal limits and planning routes before moving items.
We provide suitable equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, moving straps, protective covers and other handling aids to reduce physical strain and improve control over heavy or awkward loads. Only trained and authorised personnel may use specialist equipment such as tail lifts or hoists. Equipment is inspected regularly and removed from service if found to be unsafe.
Vehicle Safety and Driving
Movers Ruislip maintains all vehicles used for removals in safe working order, with regular servicing, checks and defect reporting procedures. Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, follow road traffic law and drive responsibly at all times.
Loads are secured to prevent movement during transit, using suitable restraints and packing arrangements. Drivers and crews plan routes to allow safe access and parking, taking particular care around residential streets, commercial premises and shared access roads. Vehicles must never be overloaded and doors or tail lifts must be operated in accordance with training.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
Our teams work in occupied homes, offices and shared buildings where members of the public and other occupants may be present. Protecting these individuals is integral to our health and safety approach.
Where reasonably practicable, we cordon off loading areas, keep routes clear, use warning signs or verbal warnings and minimise obstructions such as loose packing materials. Floors and access points are checked regularly to reduce slip and trip hazards. Care is taken to avoid blocking fire exits, emergency routes or essential services.
We encourage customers to keep children, pets and non-essential personnel away from work areas while moving activities are in progress. Where this is not possible, our staff take additional precautions and adapt their methods to maintain safety.
Training, Information and Supervision
Movers Ruislip provides health and safety induction training for new staff, including basic safety rules, reporting procedures, emergency arrangements and an introduction to safe handling techniques. Role-specific training is provided for drivers, team leaders and specialist operatives.
Refresher training is delivered as needed to address changes in legislation, equipment or working methods, or where monitoring shows that procedures are not being followed consistently. Written instructions and verbal briefings are used to reinforce safe working practices before and during jobs.
Supervision is proportionate to the level of risk and experience of the team. New or less experienced staff are paired with more experienced colleagues and are closely monitored until competent in their duties.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported to management as soon as possible. Records are kept to help identify trends and to support continuous improvement in health and safety management.
Where necessary, incidents are investigated to establish immediate and underlying causes. Appropriate corrective and preventive actions are then put in place, such as changes to procedures, additional training, equipment improvements or revised risk assessments.
Emergency procedures are in place for fire, serious injury, traffic collisions and other foreseeable events. Staff are briefed on how to raise the alarm, contact the emergency services, assist with evacuation where appropriate and make the scene safe without putting themselves or others at further risk.
Welfare, Wellbeing and Fitness for Work
Movers Ruislip recognises that moving work can be physically demanding. We seek to manage workloads sensibly, encourage the use of team lifting and mechanical aids and promote safe working hours and rest breaks in line with legal requirements.
Employees must present themselves for work in a fit state, free from the effects of alcohol or illegal drugs and without impairment from medication that could affect their ability to work safely. Any health condition that could influence safe working should be discussed confidentially with management so that suitable adjustments can be considered.
Consultation and Policy Review
We consult with employees on health and safety matters, welcoming suggestions for improving safety on moves, within vehicles and in storage or operational areas. Staff are encouraged to raise concerns without fear of negative consequences.
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our activities, organisational structure, legislation or best practice across the removals industry. Updated versions are communicated to all staff and are available for customers to view on request.
By following this policy and working together, Movers Ruislip aims to deliver professional moving services while safeguarding the health, safety and welfare of everyone involved.
